In this blog, I am going to talk about the methods and tools, which necessary for animation production. Frist of all, animation can be distinguished into 2D, 3D or 2.5D animation. However, I am going to pick 2D animation and talk about the workflow and useful software or tools on it.
(a.) what is 2D animation?
2D animation is traditional animation which start since the late 1800s, 2D animation focuses on creating characters, storyboards, and backgrounds in a 2-dimensional environment. 2D animation only has X and Y axis, which is the length and high.
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS is an example of 2D animation which present by Walt Disney on 1937.
(b.) what is the important methods to produce of a 2D animation?
The first step of producing animation is planning. Plan your animation before starting your storyboard and concept art. Don’t even start drawing without planning! Secondly, clear the message, make sure the audience can understand the images or messages you want to convey. Thirdly, tell a good story (storyboarding). A good storyline can draw audiences’ attention. Conversely, the best assets or animation tools without a good story, it won’t have a good effect to audiences. Other important steps are 12 animation principles, which make your animation more exaggerate and more interesting.

Other two elements are drawing style or photo, and animation software, such as Adobe Flash, Photoshop CS6, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere and so on.
I am using Adobe Flash for a while to do my assignments and some creative artworks. It takes a lot of time to put your work pieces together, especially “the timing". I use WACOM to draw in Adobe Flash, it’s really efficient and easy to use. About Photoshop CS6, I didn’t try to make animation through this software mostly I do my concept art in there before animating.
(This is one of my example of concept art and thumbnail by using Photoshop CS6)
I am a newbie in After Effect , I was using it several times in my class and I found it really useful to create 2D, 2.5D and 3D animation, it’s powerful software for video editing, color correction, compositing and also has powerful design tools for your animation or images. It allows you to import any kind of video and footage and you can also adjusting and tweakingthe image without getting distracting.
